America owes a debt, but who gets the cash? Ulises Wynn Seriously, African Yanks are not about to get a dime for the sins of slavery or the wealth- and opportunity-zapping effects of Jim Crow. With the exception of blacks who'd financially benefit, I believe most Yanks would rather write off that debt like a delinquent Credit card bill or a fell down investment bank. My ex, aka, The Whitest Person in the world, failed to think he ought to pay. His folks had arrived after slavery, so he was exempt. This hasn't stopped talk of reparations on the presidential campaign trail. The US House, last week, joined a chorus of others who have says sorry for slavery. This all got me thinking : My general speculation is that America does owe slave descendants a debt for the free work our ancestors gave to build what has turned out to be quite a nice country. That's plenty of dosh ; one guesstimate pegs it at $8 trillion. Besides, we'd have to work out which black folks should get the moulah. This is where my thinking took an engaging turn. You, and folk like you who back out of the good and bad of being black simply by refusing to embrace your blackness, can go beyond yourselves right from reparations. Whilst we are at it, gone are black men who date or marry exclusively light-skinned ladies or white girls -- not for love -- except for some understood social cachet. Black conservatives like Ward Connerly and Shelby Steele can go, but we'll keep Thomas Sowell and John McWhorter for their brains and wit. Uncle Ruckus, the self-hating old fart from Television's "Boondocks" and all the folk who made a contribution to the archetype on which show creator Aaron McGruder based that personality are excluded from the giant payback. BET founder Bob Johnson has lots of money, since he dished out lots of profitable TV-based crap before he sold out in more techniques than one. ( Kelsey Grammer has done more for quality black Television . ) Johnson is excluded for that and for co-signing Geraldine Ferraro's ludicrous avowal that Obama just got where he's as he's black. And we'll take a census : Each black person who insists on checking more than one box as it's so fascinating and fun to think about how mixed up we are won't get reparations. That just leaves a few us, America. We are just chatting a couple greenbacks for a couple generations of agony and degradation. I won't dance and I once lived in Connecticut. |
